What Is Knee Pain?

Knee pain is one of the most common problems people face throughout their lives, and at Taylor Physical Therapy, we see it every day. For many, knee issues develop slowly over time. Old injuries from sports, falls, or accidents – even those that happened decades ago – can lead to degenerative changes later in life. An ACL tear from the 1990s, for example, can set the stage for arthritis or reduced function years down the road if the knee is not strengthened and maintained properly. 

Knee pain can also stem from more recent concerns, including patellar tendon irritation, meniscus injuries, or general wear that develops from repetitive stress. Even when the pain feels minor at first, it can gradually change how you walk, how you stand, and how confidently you move. The knee is a major weight-bearing joint, and any irritation or weakness affects the entire chain – including the hips, back, and even the opposite leg. 

Because the knee is involved in almost every daily movement, discomfort in this area can influence driving, climbing stairs, walking long distances, exercising, and overall independence. Understanding the source of the pain is the first step toward preventing long-term limitations. 

What Are The Symptoms Of Knee Pain?

Knee pain can present in a variety of ways. Some people notice a deep ache that worsens with activity, while others feel sharp pain along the tendon below the kneecap. Swelling, stiffness, and reduced ability to fully bend or straighten the knee are also common. For some, the knee makes clicking or grinding noises, especially when standing up from a chair, climbing stairs, or squatting. This “noise” around the kneecap may signal irritation or imbalances in the joint. 

Instability is another major symptom. Many patients report that their knee “gives out,” causing fear of falling or hesitation with movement. Interestingly, this type of instability is not always a knee problem – it can originate from the hip or even the lower back, where nerve irritation may cause weakness or loss of control. 

Pain during walking, limping, or changing gait patterns can lead to overcompensation elsewhere in the body. Over time, this creates a ripple effect: knee pain may lead to hip discomfort, lower-back strain, or difficulty maintaining an active lifestyle. Even simple tasks like driving can become challenging when the right knee is irritated, making it harder to control the pedals comfortably and safely. 

What Is Our Approach To Fixing / Treating Knee Pain?

At Taylor Physical Therapy, we take a comprehensive, whole-body approach to knee pain. Instead of assuming the issue is limited to the knee itself, we evaluate movement patterns, past injuries, joint stability, strength, and the role nearby structures may be playing. Sometimes the knee is the true source of the problem – but often, the hip or back is contributing more than patients realize. 

We begin by identifying exactly where the pain is coming from and why it developed. This includes assessing joint mobility, tendon irritation, strength imbalances, and nerve involvement. Once we understand the full picture, we create an individualized plan focused on improving mechanics, strengthening the knee safely, and protecting the joint from future degeneration. 

Strengthening is one of the most important components. Building stability early helps prevent arthritis, reduces strain on the joint, and lowers the risk of future knee replacements. We also provide education on long-term maintenance so patients understand how to protect their knees throughout life. 

Movement training, manual therapy, and targeted strengthening help restore normal function. With the right plan, walking becomes easier, driving becomes safer, and everyday activities become more comfortable.
